A FMCC graduate recently took home the title of Miss Fulton County for the second time.
Colleen Gagne, 22, of Gloversville competed with 12 other women, several FM students, for the title recently.
Gagne is a 2007 graduate of Gloversville High School and 2010 graduate of FMCC. Gagne graduated FM with a fine arts degree and is currently applying to schools for occupational therapy and nursing.
Her platform is “Battling Depression”, she says she chose this platform after a family member and a few friends took their own life while battling depression. Gagne adds that there was a time when she also struggled with depression and wants to increase the awareness of depression in communities. She says it’s all over the media, teens taking their own lives, “I don’t want to see our community go through another suicide.”
This isn’t Gagne’s first time winning the title of Miss Fulton County, she has been competing in the Miss America Organization for six years and was Miss Fulton County 2008. Gagne has been to Miss New York four times and won preliminary talent and Miss Congeniality in 2009. Gagne has been playing the guitar and singing for 6 years now, and says that singing and music is a great way for helping with depression.
Gagne’s favorite part of the competition is interview, she says it’s the only time judges get to understand who you are and why you’re here. Overall, her favorite part of the Miss America Organization is “no matter where I go, local or state, I learn something new about myself and others”, this organization makes everybody stronger. Another interesting fact about Gagne, that you wouldn’t of been able to find out unless you asked her – she can lick her own elbow!
Gagne will be competing for the title of Miss New York 2012 in June at the St. George Theatre in Staten Island.
