WHY WE OFFER TUTORING?
By Brian De Los Santos Fulton Montgomery Community College offers free peer tutoring to all currently enrolled in the college.
Tutoring services offered include Trio, The Writhing Center, and the Math Lab. Tutoring sessions are designed to meet students’ individual questions and needs but the tutors do not provide direct answers for homework/exams.
The Writing center has become a good study hall attraction not just to student athletes but for other students as well. FM’s Writing Center is dedicated to helping become a better writer. Writing Center is located in the library its availability is on Monday – Friday starting at 10 a.m. and closing at 4:00pm
Jason Riffinberg, Writing center tutor, said, “Where not here to turn a C into an A. We are tutors not editors. Our goal as the Writing Center is to help students become better writers by teaching them the skills to improve their own writing and the best part it’s free, any student will benefit from coming to the writing center”.
The TRiO Study Lab in the Evan’s Library is available to students for tutoring support and as an oasis on campus with additional computers, printers, photocopier, and lounge area for their exclusive use. All this helps to create an atmosphere of community for students where they no longer feel like “foreigners”.
FM Basketball player Jordan Stewart, sophomore, general studies, said, “With practice 6 days a week and so little study time after. During common hour I’m in the Trio lab, they have every thing I need for me to have a good academic year and so on, what really stood out to me was their ability to work with me one on one they understood where I wanted to be and they showed me what I can do when I put my mind in to it”.
Located on the 2nd floor of the Evans Library the Math Lab is a green zone area that offers drop-in tutoring for all students. When it comes to math tutoring, personal learning is what we do best. Our math tutors use the student’s personal learning plan and engaging technology (such as iPads and interactive exercises) to motivate and inspire our students.
Bill Lomanto, Math Lab Coordinator, said “While working as a teacher and coming from Suny Cortland in the past I want to make these students measurable academic progress and develop a love of learning. This math lab helps kids build confidence to succeed through engaging and motivating one-on-one tutoring”.
Our math tutors get to the root of the students math help needs, so they can soar with newfound skills and confidence. The math lab helps students to become adept problem solvers as they develop the ability to organize information using a practical, visual approach to logically work through word problems and other math questions
