FM Soccer in NJCAA Regionals

By: Taz Taylor

Just when the FM soccer team thought their season was over, NJCAA Region 3 made the call and told the team that they qualified for the regional tournament.

FM was named as the eighth and final seed going into regionals.  “I was excited to be a part of the regional tournament.  I wish we knew sooner, but I think taking a short break helped us in the long run,” said Coach Cory Leggiero.

FM finished the regular season 6-7-1, and standing in their way was top ranked Herkimer County Community College.  The team had already played Herkimer during the season at home, losing that game 6-1.  For the regionals game,  they would travel to Herkimer and play them on October 26 at Wehrum Stadium.  With a win they would travel to Tompkins Cortland Community College and play in the Region 3 championship game.

FM scored first with a goal from Justin Estremera in the 13th minute.  Jack Albertin was credited with the assist.  The lead would last about 17 minutes as Herkimer tied the game in the 30th minute and scored two more goals after that, defeating the Raiders 3-1.

Coach Leggiero said that the team played well against Herkimer.  “There is something about Herkimer that makes us play a little better,” he said.

The FM Raiders finished the season with six wins, eight losses, and one tie.  Leggiero is proud of the commitment and dedication that the team had during the course of the season.

“As much credit people like to give me with the turnaround of this team, it is really the players.  They are the ones out there during matches giving their all…This year we had great people, with a great process that produced a great product,” concluded Leggiero.
